2010 MAC Leagues
Lgs 50 and 51

MAC stands for Manager's Challenge. Fanball reserves special leagues for us within the Budget Baseball contest. All teams in these MAC leagues begin the season with an identical roster.

The initial roster is selected by the prior year's MAC winner, and all teams will have exactly the same roster (and points) for week 1.

MAC is a true test of your roster management abilities!

MAC is also great for those who can't find the time to pick an initial roster.

Now inviting team owners for MAC! In addition to your regular Budget Baseball entry, why not also enter another team and put it in a MAC league this year?

MAC is in its 9th season, and all are welcome to join. There is no additional cost beyond the normal Fanball entry fee. Everything works the same as a regular entry except the roster for all MAC teams is identical for week 1; that roster is chosen by the prior year's MAC champ. After the baseball season has begun, you manage your MAC team individually just as you do in standard Fanball lgs.

2009 MAC winner MACatcher in the Rye has won the honor of picking the 2010 initial roster.

How to Participate:

  • Do all this by Jan 31 to take advantage of the discounted entry price
  • Enter a team into Budget Baseball, and be sure to choose "Enter my team with placement restrictions"
  • Look for "Enter my team in this league -" and type in 50 (or use 51 after lg 50 is full)
  • Leave your roster empty (when later prompted, choose "No I want to enter my players later")
  • Your roster will automatically be filled by Fanball with the players selected by last year's MAC winner
  • After week 1 has started, each team owner can then manage his/her team as deemed fit per normal Fanball rules. Team rosters and points will diverge beginning with week 2.

The Winners!
Congrats to the 2009 Manager's Challenge Champion: MACatcher in the Rye! Several different teams led until week 13 when Catcher took over for the remainder of the season. Only MAC BOZ, who was the runner up, kept things close. Appropriately, Catcher's addition of Joe Mauer in May was a key acquistion. He wins the honor of picking the 2010 MAC roster.

Rounding out the other top 10 finishers (out of the 50 MAC teams) were, in order:

MAC BOZ
Dizzy and Daffy
ZMAC TALKIN
Michigan Trumbull MAC
ABC Triplets MAC
Baileys Bullets Mac
The Fool on the Hill
AA Yankees- MAC
BobCat MAC

History of MAC winners:

Special thanks to Dick's Big Sticks for in 2002 organizing the first MAC competition. He writes, "A short summary of the history of MAC. There was a lot of debate one year as to whether some of us were giving out to much information on the BBS and that lurkers could just simply read the board and get a good team. I argued that you could give lesser-skilled team managers a good team but they would still end up with poor results. MAC was created to prove this point and I created a roster that I think was good but not great. It was decided that the winner each year would create the next year's roster which was OK by me because I really didn't want the responsibility of doing it every year. With a different person creating the roster each year, we've had some diversity as to how it's set up. I think that's a good thing and keeps it interesting."

Worst Team League

2010 WTL

WTL stands for Worst Team League

No Studs, Just Duds

Hall of Shame

Bad luck/skills wished to all!

And now, for something completely different...

Use one of your free entries in Fanball's Salary Cap MLB contest, and compete to see who can have the worst team. It's tougher than it looks!

How to Play: simply enter a team in Fanball's Salary Cap MLB contest and abide by the following WTL rules:

  • your team must accumulate a minimum of 2500 GP (games played) total for the season
  • there is NO minimum team salary
  • you can make only the 1 free roster change per week, any more disqualifies your team
  • join the WTL group so your team can be tracked with the others
  • use Fanball's Join a Group feature and add your team to Group Name worst2010 with Access Word worst2010
  • to qualify, your team must appear listed in the worst2010 group by week 4 of the season, and stay joined
The WTL team with fewest points at the end of the 26-week season is the champ! A Completely Random Amazing Prize (CRAP) will be awarded the champ. Is it a 1962 Mets team photo? Maybe a Jose Macias rookie card? Rack down the fewest points, and you'll find out.

In the event no team reaches 2500 GPs at the end of the contest, or if two (or more) teams tie in PTs, the winner will be the team with the lowest PTs/GPs ratio.

In recent years, more than half the entrants have been unable to reach 2500 GP, and were thus disgualified. Each week you fall behind in GP, you have less time remaining to catch up, so watch that GP column!

Some strategy tips:

  • stock up on part-time players, the veteran pinch-hitter, the late inning defensive specialist, etc.
  • avoid starting pitchers, but to reach 2500 GP you might need to fill a few SP slots with those who toss few IP
  • "situational lefty" is likely the WTL's ideal pitcher
  • seek players from teams whose manager tends to use many replacements
  • look to achieve about 100 GPs per week every week
  • if you fall behind in GP, don't delay catch up measures

The Reigning Champ!
Summit Worst Team League captured his third WTL title with the only sub 2 ppg team of the year. The 2500 GP floor proved tougher than usual to reach, and was the undoing of former champs Chuckleheads and Scrap Heap who missed qualifying by just a few games. Finishing second was BobCat's Polecats. Only 7 of the 17 competitors reached the 2500 GP min, up from 6 of 17 in 2008.

Special thanks to Steuben Kings for posting WTL stat updates all season, as well as those below.
